About Us
John Liu JD MBA CFA has over two decades of experience managing stock and bond portfolios, first for institutional clients and now for individuals, families, and non-profits.
John began his investment career in the 1990’s, researching stocks for Allianz Global Investors, a large institutional asset manager in San Francisco. He was responsible for technology, internet, consumer, and industrial sector investments for mutual funds, pension funds, and other institutional portfolios.
In 2006 he relocated to Portland to join the institutional investment firm Columbia Management. He then co-founded Montibus Capital Management, an institutional investment manager which grew to $1.2 billion in assets under management for mutual funds, pension funds, endowments and family offices. At Montibus, he focused on the biotechnology, healthcare, technology, and consumer sectors.
In 2016 John moved to wealth management as a senior portfolio manager at US Bank Private Wealth Management, managing over $600 million in investment portfolios for individuals, families, trusts, companies, and non-profits.
This investing experience spans three economic cycles, including three bull markets, three bubbles, and two bear markets.
Previously, John was a partner and trial lawyer with Pillsbury Madison & Sutro in Los Angeles. He has a B.A. degree in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley, a J.D. degree from the University of California at Los Angeles, and an M.B.A. degree from the University of California at Berkeley. John has held the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation since 2002.
John founded Laurelhurst Asset Management, LLC to bring his institutional investment approach and experience to the management of individual, family and non-profit portfolios.
